Hocus Pocus 2 Is Officially Happening And The Witches Are Coming Back For A TV Only Movie!

After more than two decades, the Sanderson sisters are returning to terrify the children of Salem once again. Rumors of the three evil old witches making a come back have been here for quite a while but a sequel is indeed in works. The 1993 horror-comedy movie, is a Halloween classic and a cult movie with a major fan following. Hocus Pocus, starring Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker wasn’t a commercial success initially but is now one of the most watched movies on Halloween and loved films made by Disney.

The talks of the sequel first started in 2014 when it was announced that Disney is working on a witch movie which people believed was a Hocus Pocus sequel. Since then, longtime fans of the movie have been waiting for a sequel to arrive and now the director of the movie has confirmed that a Hocus Pocus movie sequel is indeed happening but it won’t be released in theatres. It will be a TV only movie.

According to ScreenRant, Hocus Pocus 2 is currently in development which will be released on Freeform and probably Disney’s new streaming service called Disney Plus. There’s no word on whether the movie will be a direct sequel or more like a reboot, however, regardless of how many times the actresses who played the iconic roles have expressed their wish to resume their roles, the movie will feature an entirely new cast.

David Kirschner, the executive producer of the original film, is on board and is producing Hocus Pocus 2, while Scarlett Lacey is penning down the script of the movie. The original director of Hocus Pocus Kenny Ortega is not involved with the new project. The fact that the movie will feature new faces comes as a disappointment to not only the fans but also the old cast of the movie. In fact, Bette Midler is super pissed.

“Inundate the Disney company. Because I have canvassed the girls and they are willing to do it, but we have no say in it,” Midler said in an interview before it was confirmed that there will be an all-new cast but when the news broke that Disney is looking for new faces, Midler lost it, “I know it’s cheap. It’s going to be cheap!” and added that nobody can do justice to her character. “My character is very, very broad and I don’t know who they’re going to find to play that.” Yikes!

Mick Garris, the OG screenwriter of Hocus Pocus, who is not involved with the new movie, believes that making the sequel without the iconic sisters will be a huge mistake, “I think they are [bringing back the original cast]. If they don’t do that I think it would be a big mistake because all three of them are still so incredibly potent and powerful and great performers and who else can recreate those characters?” We agree.

“There have been rumors of a Hocus Pocus sequel for the last 10 years that will not die. I have heard they are developing the script, I haven’t been involved in it but I think there will be a sequel it might be for Disney Channel or Freeform or ABC. I think it will be for television but I hear that it is moving ahead,” he added confirming the sequel in 2017. We’ll take a TV only movie, that’s not a problem, but the original cast, please!

The sequel will be based on the new Hocus Pocus novel called Hocus Pocus and the All-New Sequel. In the book, Max and Allison are married and have a 17-year-old daughter named Poppy, still living in Salem. “Twenty-five years later, Max and Allison’s seventeen-year-old daughter, Poppy, finds herself face-to-face with the Sanderson sisters in all their sinister glory. When Halloween celebrations don’t quite go as planned, it’s a race against time as Poppy and her friends fight to save her family and all of Salem from the witches’ latest vile scheme,” reads the book’s synopsis. Will you be watching the sequel? Let’s hope they change their minds and bring back the Sanderson sisters we love!
